What kind of food do you suggest for healthy living? | |
On television the word "junk food" appears often but suggestions of healthy nurishment are rare. What is your suggestion ?
Answers:
1Hummous is the best thing on earth. Put a (drained) can of chickpeas into a blender, add 2-3 tablespoons of OLIVE oil, one clove chopped garlic, and blend until pureed, adding water as you go if it gets to thick.
Then you can dip pieces of WHOLEWEAT pitta bread, sliced carrots or celery in it and it tastes fantastic.
Add garam masala, lemon juice, black pepper, and/or coriander leaves to the hummous for extra flavour.
Another good food is basmati rice. It has a lower GI rating so you don't get hungry right after eating it. Rice is really low in calories, so a meal like chilli or curry that you can eat with rice can be very healthy. To make an easy chilli, chop up your favourite vegetables and fry in a little olive oil. Add chilli powder (or fresh chopped chillies if you're feeling brave), a can of tomatoes (or fresh chopped tomatoes) and a can of red kidney/chilli beans (look out for the ones that come already in chilli sauce). Simmer for about 15 minutes and serve with a dollop of zero fat sour creme (craime fraiche) or cottage cheese.
To make an easy curry, you could do the same thing but with a balti powder, or to be a bit different, fry the vegetables in a little sunflower oil, add some garam masala powder or korma powder. Fry it until they are really well done, then, keeping the pan on the heat, add enough BOILING water to cover the vegetables. Let it reduce down, then spoon in some zero fat sour creme and stir until you have a smooth creamy sauce. It tastes like it is bad for you, but it's not!
Also, I don't believe in ever cutting out a food group. People who don't eat carbohydrates must be so bored!
